Alec Baldwin Announces Support for Offshore Wind Power & Launch of Public Education Campaign
Mineola, N.Y. – September 1, 2005 – Massapequa native Alec Baldwin joined Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) Chairman Richard Kessel and RELI executive director Gordian Raacke to announce the launch of a public service campaign to highlight the benefits of LIPA's proposed Offshore Wind Park.
The campaign is aimed at educating the public about the need for clean, safe, renewable energy sources that will help Long Island enhance public health and the environment for generations to come.
Alec Baldwin donated his time to record radio spots that stress the need to reduce Long Island's dependence on fossil fuels by adopting clean alternative energy sources, and highlight the health, safety and environmental benefits of what could be America's first offshore wind energy park.
"As a native Long Islander, I am thrilled to see us leading the nation in the development of offshore wind energy and a more rational energy policy," said Alec Baldwin. "Harvesting our offshore winds to produce pollution-free energy is a forward-looking solution that protects public health, the environment and the region's quality of life and I am proud to support LIPA & RELI's effort to lead the way towards a clean and abundant source of energy," concluded Baldwin.
"The financial cost of fossil fuels is continuing to increase dramatically, and the environmental and health costs associated with fossil fuel-generated electricity continue to rise," said LIPA Chairman Richard Kessel. "Now is the perfect time to move forward with our Offshore Wind Project to begin to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels, and we're pleased that Alec Baldwin is adding his support to the effort." "This project will likely be the nation's first Offshore Wind Park and we are seeking to educate the public about the benefits of this project so that it will serve as a national model for wind energy production," stated Gordian Raacke, RELI Executive Director. "Offshore and land-based wind power generation is a proven technology and, as many countries in Europe and across the globe have demonstrated, can provide a substantial amount of safe, clean reliable energy.," added Raacke.
As part of its efforts to inform Long Islanders about the benefits of renewable energy and offshore wind power, RELI is also launching its internet offshore wind park discussion forum where the public can obtain information, post comments and discuss the wind park in a virtual town hall meeting open forum. It can be accessed via RELI's Web site or directly at http://www.renewableenergylongisland.org/forums

Alec Baldwin Offshore Wind Energy Park Radio Spots
Renewable Energy Long Island (RELI), a non-profit clean energy advocacy group, has produced a 60, 30, and 15 second radio spots in which Long Island native and actor Alec Baldwin discusses the benefits of LIPA's proposed Offshore Wind Park. Mr. Baldwin generously donated his time to record the spots and 91 East provided professional recording and engineering services pro bono.
RELI will use as much free media exposure via PSAs as possible and LIPA will buy additional paid air time to distribute the spots to a sizable number of people listening to main stream commercial radio during prime time.
The objective of the radio spot campaign is to generate public awareness about clean, renewable energy sources and to build support to bring more safe, carbon-free energy to Long Island. The paid spots and PSAs will create awareness and build support for the proposed Offshore Wind Park and highlight the benefits of clean energy.
Distribution
RELI will distribute CDs to all LI radio stations that air PSAs. Spots will also be available on RELI's website at www.RenewableEnergyLongIsland.org and at www.LIoffshoreWindEnergy.org
LIPA will buy air time on several LI-based commercial stations.
Timing
Spots will begin airing in early September and October 2005.
